Spotlight on Uganda: powering one of East Africa’s fastest-growing economies

This is the first in our new ‘Spotlight’ series, showcasing the countries we’re working in and the projects we’re delivering.

Abundant potential, held back by the grid
Uganda is one of East Africa’s fastest-growing economies, with abundant energy potential. The country has invested heavily in generation, growing capacity by 60% in just five years. However, half the population still lacks access to power.

The missing link is the grid. Electricity generated cannot reach the homes, businesses and industries that need it without the transmission infrastructure to carry it. In response, Uganda is targeting 13,000km of new transmission lines over the next 20 years – an investment of $4.8bn.

Meeting that challenge requires long-term capital and partnership. That’s where Gridworks is stepping up. We are working alongside Uganda’s government and our partners to deliver two landmark projects.

Amari Power Transmission
Amari Power Transmission will upgrade substations at key locations on Uganda’s grid. These upgrades will strengthen the backbone of the network, with construction completed in 2028.

Gamani Power Transmission
Gamani Power Transmission will develop new high-voltage lines in eastern Uganda, connecting Bulambuli, Kween and Mbale. This new infrastructure will unlock 250MW of renewable energy generation.

Together, these projects are a key part of Uganda’s plan to expand its grid and unlock its potential. They will unlock energy access, increase the uptake of renewables and power economic growth.
