Supporting economic development, improving electricity access and enabling the uptake of new sources of energy generation. We’re committed to tackling these three challenges.
Gridworks was established in 2019 as a dedicated platform for development and investment in Africa’s electricity networks. We invest in transmission, distribution and distributed energy utilities, both on and off-grid. Owned and funded by the British Government, we are a subsidiary of British International Investment, the UK’s development finance institution.
Over recent decades, there has been significant investment in power generation across Africa to address the need for reliable electricity. However, creating sustainable, efficient and reliable power sectors requires significant and targeted investment in the electricity networks that transmit and distribute that power.
This is where we come in. We bring investment and a commercial mindset, building replicable business models, and mobilising private capital.
Through our work we aim to deliver a range of impacts. These include economic development through improved grid reliability; greater energy access; and climate benefits through the increasing uptake of new sources of energy generation.
We develop and then invest in critical electricity network infrastructure. This includes utility concessions, public private partnerships, management contracts, rural electrification programmes, isolated grid systems, off-grid to on-grid investments, and utility services companies.
We want to contribute to the long-term transformation of electricity networks in Africa, to benefit communities, businesses and the climate. We know that this won’t happen overnight. By taking the right approach, patience and commitment, we can make a lasting difference.
