DFC – the US Government’s development finance institution – has announced it is providing a US$3.1 million grant to Weza Power.
Weza Power is a new electricity distribution utility launched in 2023 by our portfolio company Anzana Electric Group and the Government of Burundi. This backing from DFC will support a pilot project to connect more than 40,000 new homes and businesses to the grid starting in 2025. It will also support final development activities on Weza Power’s planned expansion over the next 7 years, as it aims to mobilise more investment and reach up to 9 million Burundians.
Shaun Githuku, Business Development Director at Gridworks, said:
“It is great to see Weza Power receiving such critical support for the model that Anzana is pioneering in Burundi. We’re delighted that the US Government – through DFC – is providing its backing and we’re pleased to work alongside them as partners.”
Brian Kelly, Founder and CEO of Anzana Electric Group, said:
“Universal access to reliable, affordable, and clean energy is possible in Burundi with innovative funding partnerships and blended finance, and DFC’s early involvement will play an important catalytic role.”
