Gridworks joins the Energy Council of South Africa to advance investment in South Africa’s energy transition

Energy Council SA

We are proud to announce Gridworks is joining the Energy Council of South Africa – an initiative dedicated to fostering a thriving and sustainable energy future across the country. This partnership reflects our commitment to accelerating South Africa’s energy transition by strengthening grid infrastructure.

South Africa faces a critical challenge: limited grid capacity is now the country’s greatest energy security risk. Expanding and modernising the transmission network is essential to unlock new generation capacity and ensure a reliable, competitive electricity market. Gridworks brings deep technical expertise and a proven track record in developing transmission and distribution projects across Africa, positioning us to play a meaningful role in addressing this challenge.

“With limited grid capacity being South Africa’s largest energy security threat, Grid Expansion is a key priority area underpinning the work of the Energy Council of South Africa,” said James Mackay, CEO of the Energy Council of South Africa. “Gridworks’ membership will offer technical and global expertise in developing transmission projects, critical insights to support the Energy Council’s tactical operations in delivery, addressing the national energy objectives.”

“South Africa has been particularly successful in attracting private sector investment in generation, the greatest challenge now rests in expanding and improving the electricity transmission network,” said Chris Flavin, Gridworks’ CEO. “We look forward to supporting the important work the Energy Council does to boost private sector investment in South Africa’s transmission sector.”

According to Eskom’s Transmission Development Plan, an additional 17 GW of generation capacity must be connected by 2030, requiring approximately 14,200 km of new transmission lines and an estimated R440 billion in investment. This represents not only a technical challenge but also a significant industrialisation opportunity for South Africa.

By joining the Energy Council of South Africa, we aim to:

  • Share global insights and best practices in transmission development.
  • Support strategies that enable private sector participation in grid expansion.
  • Contribute to building a resilient, future-ready electricity network.

We are committed to working alongside public, private, and international stakeholders to strengthen South Africa’s energy infrastructure and advance a balanced, sustainable transition.
