Our portfolio company, Anzana Electric Group, is Burundi playing an important role in supporting energy access in Burundi. In April 2025, Anzana’s subsidiary, Songa Energy, completed the Upper Ruvyironza hydropower plant after a 23-month construction period.
The facility is now fully operational and supplying 10 GWh of clean, baseload electricity to Burundi’s national grid. Last week, President Évariste Ndayishimiye and US Ambassador to Burundi Lisa Peterson visited the plant for its inauguration ceremony.
It is the second operational independent power project in the country.
Access to reliable electricity remains one of Burundi’s most pressing challenges. Today, only 2% of rural communities have access to energy. By delivering clean power, the Upper Ruvyironza plant is helping to close this gap, supporting economic growth, improving energy access and reducing reliance on diesel generation.
